Paolo Montalban impresses with his singing

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHEN you listen to Paolo Montalban's self-titled album for Vicor, you'd understand why he has impressed international audiences in the U.S. and other parts of the world. His singing style is evident in his interpretation of such familiar songs as "She," "Pure Imagination," and "I Have Dreamed." His album has 11 songs, three of which are in Pilipino: the original carrier single "Kung 'Di Tayo Paano Na" and revivals of "Ikaw" and "Kung Alam Mo Lang." Paolo will stay here until July 27 to promote his album. He is guesting in Sharon Cuneta's show this Sunday and does a duet of "Ikaw" with her. He is also in "Unang Hirit," "SIS," and "SOP."

Before he recorded the album, he just finished shooting "The Great Raid" with Benjamin Bratt and Cesar Montano in Queensland, to be released next year.

"I play Sgt. Valera, an elite soldier and Alamo scout. We trained in a bootcamp in Australia before shooting the movie. The first cut of the film is 7 hours long so they had to trim it down. I don't know what scenes they'll cut but I'm glad my role is vital to the raid so they just can't edit it out."

He is due to take auditions for "The Practice" on TV. How about Broadway? "I haven't gone there for so long because I'm staying mostly in Hollywood."

How was it working with Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg and Victor Garber (of "Alias") who played his parents in "Cinderella"?

"Whoopi is awesome. She's even funnier in person than on screen. I've always been a fan of Victor since I saw him on stage in 'Godspell' and 'Sweeney Todd'."

Does he know that another Pinoy actor from Broadway is here to do an album, Jose Llana?

"Yes. We've worked together in 'The King and I.' I've been warned that the press might pit us against each other, but I don't really mind as long as it's a friendly kind of rivalry and no mudraking involved."

Regine Velasquez has been quoted as saying he called her beautiful and gorgeous. Some people thought she's just making it up. "No. I really called her that because she's truly gorgeous and beautiful for me. She's also very attractive and talented. I heard people are linking us but I don't think it'd be a good idea because I don't want people saying I'm using Regine since she's a bigger star here than I am."

He's currently staying with relatives in Magallanes Village. "My Auntie Sony has a bakeshop and she feeds me a lot of bread so my worry is I might gain so much while I am here."
